Oman power output rises while water production falls

    October 12, 20263 Mins Read

MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s electricity production increased 4.3% year on year during the first eight months of 2026. Total output reached 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours, compared with 35,935.3 GWh in the same period of 2025. The increase amounted to about 1,546.5 GWh. Preliminary figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information showed gains across several governorates. August production reached 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July. National output therefore remained above its 2025 level.

Muscat recorded the strongest rise in total electricity production, with output increasing 204.8% from a year earlier. Al Dakhiliyah followed with growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta posted an 8.4% increase. Production across North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah rose 5.5%. Dhofar recorded a 4.6% gain over the same period. The figures showed electricity growth varied widely by region as national production increased. Several governorates posted higher output during the reporting period.

North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah recorded a different pattern during the first eight months. Combined electricity production in the two governorates fell 16.4% from the comparable period of 2025. Musandam produced 376.0 GWh, leaving output broadly unchanged from a year earlier. The regional figures showed increases across most areas covered by the national data. Oman’s overall electricity production remained higher through the end of August. The figures cover output from January through August 2026.

Net electricity production rises across Oman

Net electricity production also increased during the January to August period. Output rose 4.6% to 36,463.9 GWh from 34,871.8 GWh a year earlier. The measure includes purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat led net production growth with an increase of 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah rose 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar gained 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. The national increase totaled about 1,592.1 GWh.

North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah recorded a combined 5.4% increase in net electricity production. North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw net output decline 16.6%. Musandam reported 368.0 GWh, with its published annual change rate at 0.0%. National net electricity production stayed above the comparable 2025 level. The regional pattern largely reflected the movements in total electricity output. Net production increased across several governorates during the eight-month period.

Water production declines through August 2026

Oman’s water production moved lower over the same eight-month period. Total output fell 3.5% to 330.65 million cubic metres from about 342.71 million a year earlier. Muscat water production declined 6.2% to around 128.07 million cubic metres. That compared with about 136.57 million cubic metres during the same period of 2025. Output across other governorates fell 3.4% to about 149.90 million cubic metres. Those areas produced roughly 155.19 million cubic metres a year earlier.

Dhofar moved against the national water trend and recorded higher production. Output reached about 52.68 million cubic metres, up 3.4% from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest figures show electricity and water moving in different directions across Oman through August 2026. Electricity production increased at both total and net levels during the period. Water production declined overall despite the increase recorded in Dhofar. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies the figures as preliminary.
